Story of the Game

start of Game
The games story is very simple and easy to follow. The game starts with the Power Rangers facing off againts Rita, one of the most iconic villains of the franchise. The heroes were about to win however, Rita revealed her final trump card, time travel. The heroes decide not to follow her in the past as it might cause a paradox and a rift between time and space. They simply decide to trust their past selves. Back in the past, Alpha and Zordon sense the anomaly caused bby Rita and call upon this timelines Power Rangers, a group of teens who use the power of Power Morphers that help them transform and grands them super abilities such as speed, power, durability and armor. Whlist the ranegrs search for clues as to what is going on, the Present Rita keeps sending her minions to collect special Crystals. At the same time, the Future Rita approaches the present one and the two will work together in order to take down the heroes. The Ritas also have trick under their sleeve.

Thoughts on the Story

As someone who grew up with the series and didnt keep up with the series for a while, i gotta say i appreciated it. It feels like a small arc summed up in 15 levels. Pretty much the intro acts as the set up and the Power Rangers go through some "villain of the day" in order to reach their final destination which is Rita. These villains of the day were chosen by the devs as they were iconic and had well recognised figures. The encounter goes as follows, the Rangers fight multiple minions whilst gathering information, they reach the boss who will give them more details and eventually fight each other which sometimes leads into a Megazord fight. Its a formula that works perfectly well for the series, plain and simple.

Gameplay

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Rita's Rewind is a classic side scroller beat em up similars to games like Streets of Rage or TMNT shredder's revenge. The player can choose to play this game solo, in local coop(up to 4) and in online which can lead up to 6, one player for each Power Ranger. Beat em up games are the the ones where the player walks in a 2D environment whilst defeating various types of enemies. Usually the player gets locked in an area and will have to beat all the enemies in order to proceed. The compat is usually very linear and there are some interactable items that can be used. Power rangers also added various elements such as shooting sections, boss battles and others.

Before entering a level, the player is placed in a small hubworld with a couple of NPCs and the human versions of the hero squad. The player can interact with them in order to swap to that hero. For example, if you control Jason(red Ranger) and interact with Billy(blue Ranger) then the player will control Billy and thus use the blue ranger in the level. The player can then select the level of preference and then the game shall begin. Upon entering the level, a small dialog exchange will take place and then the game begins. On the top left, the player will notice their characters profile as well as the 2 bars and certain numbers. The number ontop of the rangers profile pic, depicts the lives of the hero(eg x2) where as the big numbers ontop of the main bar is the points earned in the level. The big bar next to the hero's profile is representing the hero's HP bar. The big bar placed under the profile and expands all the way to the end is the Ultimate charge bar. The more damage dealt, the more that bar fills.

In terms of pure gameplay each power rangers plays the same, however, the animations differ. By default the Rangers have a default punching combo. Attacks can also be triggered by jumping diagnaly or vertically by double jumping. Walking towards the enemy and tapping the attack button the Ranger will grap the enemy and land multiple hits before throwing them away. Similarly by running towards an enemy and tapping the attack button the Rangers will perform a sliding hit. As mentioned, dealling damage will charge the ultimate bar and when maxed, the player can tap the ultimate key and perform a devastating AoE attack. In terms of defensive skills the player can walk away from the damage, jump away or use the dodge button. Breaking certain boxes, the player might obtain food items that will heal the player. If a rangers falls, they can respawn as long as they have lives.

There are some different types of levels where the heroes re riding their bikes or re inside their Zords. During these levels the heroes have their backs againts the player and re moving towards the inside. The players can only use the right and left arrow as well as the jumb. In terms of attack the players can use the mellee button which will instead shoot projectiles ahead of them. Again ultimate is being charged and alternative shootings ammo can be found. Last but not least the players can battle using their Megazords. During these levels the players can use the right and left arrows to dodge incoming projectiles, forward to close the gap and two buttons to attack with each hand. In the middle there is a sword which needs to be filled in order to kill/win againts the enemy. In Coop, if a player gets hit three times, the other one gets to control the Megazond.

Thoughts on the Gameplay

My thoughts on the gameplay were mixed. I personally liked the basic idea of the gameplay, however i didnt and still dont like the idea of each Ranger playing the exact same. There is only 6 Ranegrs, each with a unique mellee weapon, they could ve easily give them a unique skillset/movement aside from just the ultimate. Especially when games like TMNT shredder's Revenge made each turtle member feel different. I loved the zords/bike levels and especially the circus one which altered the gameplay alot. I do believe i enjoyed the game mostly because it was coop, otherwise i would have found the mellee combat slighlty repeatetive. What i dissliked the most were the Megazord levels. I found them boring as the gameplay loop is the same slow thing which ruins the pace of the game. I also found annoying how each time one of us received three hits we had to watch the time consuming animation in order for the next one to play. i cant imagine how much time would ve been lost in a four or even six players. I also found it anticlimatic how some boss battles were just ending without an animation or anything to make the mashing of attack impactfull.

Post game Content

In terms of post game content i cant say that the game offers much aside from playing the same game over and over with different people. For a single player point of view, the player can max out the Power Ranger stats, something that happen in 10 minutes(multiplayer) by spamming mission 11(bike level). Additionally the players can try and get S rank in all missions by not dying, completing within time and getting all the collectible items. Furtermore, completing the game allows the player to play the game in an additional difficulty. Additionally, the players can play the 3 minigames found in the arcade machines. These are small games that vary between them and their content. Last but not least, there is a Speedrun mode in which the players can set a speedrun record and compete amongs the community.

Sound and Graphics

On the visual department the game looks pretty good. It's artstyle and art direction resemble that of the classic Arcade. The pixel sprites are well made and look pretty good. There are not any cutscenes aside from the Megazord transformation which does look like a very well detailed and smooth. The sprites of the portraits of the characters interacting look very clean and interesting. There are some visual references scattered around the game and its something that fans can appreciate. The main issue of the visuals are during the motorbike and Zord battles as the explosions make it hard to see. During bike levels theres plenty of one shot kills sho taking away your vision might be the reason why you drove on a wall or a huge bomb.

Audio wise the game does a good job on capturing the feeling of playing on a classic arcade. The music is reminissing of that 8 bit genre and there are filters that make the dialog come out "oldish". The hero dialogs during gameplay also come out of the PS5 Duelsense. Special effects are louder than the background music which once again is something old arcades used to do. Once again audio references can be heard and its up to the players to spot them. Again the only issue i had with the audio is the lack of audio files when it comes down to the power rangers in game.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Mighty Morphing Power rangers is an alright game. The story plays similar to a normal episode/ movie of the IP where the villain has a plan and the Power Rangers take down the enemy's minions as they re searching for clues which would lead them to their end goal. The gameplay is similar to classic Arcade beat em ups like streets of Rage, Karate kid however it has a colorful vibe and its based on a popular IP similar to TMNT Shredder's revenge. It offers a nice variety of levels such as Bike rides, Zord rush, Shooting levels and Megazord fights. The gameplay is straight forward since the heroes have limited moves. Unfortunatelly, most of the heroes play the excact same making the hero choice pointless in my opinion. They do have different ultimates and animation but the moveset is the excact same making other games like TMNT Shredder's revenge a better choice since all the turtles play differently. There are some nice ideas and clever boss fights which i appreciated. I would reccomend playing the game in Co-op as beat em up games are far more enjoyable when you share them with friends. Upon defeating the game theres not much things you can do which is unfortunate as the game can be completed within 2 hours more or less. Overall, i would say its an okay game, worth playing if found at a cheap price however, if you want to play a game of its genre i would reccomend a couple of others(like TMNT or Marvel) before concluding to this one.
