About the Game

Sonic Colors was a 2010 platforming game developed by the Sonic team for the Nintendo Wii and by Dimps for the Nintendo Ds. Back then the game was received with mostly possitive feedback, however, as mentioned it was only for the two platforms owned by Nintendo. Eleven years later during Sonic's 30th anniversary online event, the Sega announced that Sonic : Colors Ultimate was gonna be remaster for the current platforms and teased a future project that will be the next main entry of the franchise.
Sonic Colors Ultimate is a remaster of the original made by the Sonic team and Blind Squirrel. upon it's announcment, the game had a mixture of opinions with once again the possitive outnumbering the negative. Since the game was a Nintendo exclusive, people who never got to experienced the old one, were looking forward for it. As the release date was getting closer and closer, Sega showed more of colors. The trailers showed graphics that there were more of the wii era than the playstation 4 and Xbox one. Due to that plenty of fans lash online claimming that this is not a game made for this era and how Sega was not taking the remaster project seriously. Few weeks prior to release the developers released new gameplay trailers with upgraded graphics and new implementations made for Ultimate. These implementations were rival mode, character customization and a new wisp ability. With all that beeing said, Sonic Colors Ultimate had plenty of sales, placing No.3 in Uk (Physical market/ Not the Digital Sales). Buying the Physical release of the game included codes with cosmetic player icons and a key chain of baby Sonic from the Sonic Movie (2020).

Story of the Game

Unlike the other entries of the series, Sonic color's story is simple and very straight forward. Dr. Eggman build and Opened a Luna Park called Dr. Eggmans Incredible Interstellar Park outside of the earth's Atmosphere as a way to prove that he is a new man and that his evil deeds are in the past. The main atraction of his Park are some several planet-sized attractions. Sonic doesn't trust him though, and he and his best friend Tails decide to visit the park in order to investigate. Whilst on the park, they come across Yacker, an alien whose species are the Wisps. Yacker, doesn't speak the landuage so Tails decide to spent time building a translator. At the same time Sonic, is bored of the idea of waiting and ventures around on his own. Tail's translator picks Yacker's sounds and by the looks of it, Eggman enslaved his kind and uses their energy to power up his weapons including a lazer ray that he will cast on earth in order to brainwash the inhabitants. Sonic's mission now is to visit every single attraction within the park and put a stop to Eggman's evil plans.

The Good and Bad of the Game's Story

Sonic Colors story is very plain very simple and yet its very effective. The plot of the game might as well be summarised in one sentence. Eggman's evil space Luna park. The story is delivered though cutscenes that are full on voice acted. It also has plenty of enjoyable voice lines comming out of them. Whether it's from Sonic's attidute, Tail's 'translator' misstranslating or Dr Eggmans side minions Orbot and Cubot who have their own funny side-plot. There's nothing really bad about the story unless people were spoiled from the darker stories of Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic unleashed (2008) which were prior to Colors.

Gameplay

Hub-World

Game'hubworld This is the first Sonic game that focussed on being close to the Super Mario games. To elabrate the Mario games had that trend, where after the prologue Super Mario is placed on a hub world and manuver through paths in order to enter a level. Once the level is selected and cleared, a path will open and interconnect with another level (Super Mario World 3, Super Mario 3D World). The past Sonic games had the hero placed in an open hub world while the player was manuvering around in order to find the level they have to play while story required the player to reach that certain map. Upon openning the game, the player gets the overview of the Theme Park with the attractionschained to it. There is a total of 7 attactions and each one of them has a total of 6 levels and 1 boss battle. When the boss battle is cleared, the next attraction becomes available from the player. The 7th world, is the only world with 3 levels, a platforming level and a boss battle.
The Satelite in the hub world is the options. By selecting that, the player can change the games settings (sound, effects, subtitles etc.). Furthermore, the players can keep track of their stats and records. While on the stats the players can see a board with all the status such as how many levels were cleared, how many emeralds they have and how many races they won. On the other hand the records show each realm, the time records set by the player on each level, the overall rank they earned and the ammount of Red coins they earned. Moreover, here the players can select Customize and buy different cosmeticks for Sonic(See Collectables.) Last but not least visit the extras. The extras contain all of the cinematics unlocked within the game, from the oppening cinematic all the way to the last cutscene seen after credits and the music files available for the game. The music available from each level the game had for each Act/level.
The bright Star located to the right of the screen becomes available once the player succesfully finish the game and watch the after credit scene. The star represents the credits roll. The credits are 30 mins long and during them, the player can control Sonic and smash different letters earning rings. At the same time the player can obtain all of the Wisps power ups and test them out while smashing letters.
There's visually a rocket blimp that moves around and it is known as the Egg Shuttle. This place is known as the challenge area and request from the player to play through all the acts randomly placing better scores. All the red coins ae removed and the player should only foccus on finishing the level. If the player happens to die and his friends Tails is unavailable, then the player will respawn back on the very first map losing all of their progression made, otherwise, if Tails is available he will pick his friend and place him at the start of the certain act. the boss battles all of them got a slightly buff making the trial more challenging.
The final available option in the hub world is Game Land and is represented with a robotic face of Sonic. This is the place where levels are unlocked the more red coins a player collects. Every set of red coins unlock act 1 to 3 for each of the seven areas. The way the levels are beein unlocked is, first all acts 1, acts 2 and then act 3. When the players succesfully unlock act 3 and defeat the given boss, the player is rewarded with a chaos emerald. More details further below at the multiplayer section.

Basic Gameplay

Sonic games are platforming games that have their focuss mainly on speed. In the recent era Sonic manuvers through both 2D and 3D levels. Each level has the blue blur running to reach each goal whilst collecting rings and various power ups. Rings are essential as they count towards the final score and more importantly as a second chance. To elaborate Sonic is very fragile and any enemy or map trap can one shot the hero. The rings on the other hand act as a second chance and prevent sonic from dying. Once the players are hit, they drop all of their rings and they have but a few seconds to recollect them before they dissappear. However, dropping of the map, squeezed in between objects and drowning is a guarantee death with or without rings. Each level has a few collectable items such as red coins, Coins spent for cosmeticks, Wisps and Tails. Tails appears as a bubble face of Sonic's Friend and acts as a safe respawn. To elaborate if the player dies, Tails will place his friend back to the last checkpoints with all of their collectables. Dying without a Tails Spawns the player back without the items they collected prior.

Wisps

Game'scover Wisps is a new concept introduced in colors and they 're little aliens fused with Sonic to unlocked further abilities. Their Concept is very similar to the power ups found in Super Mario games, where Mario picks a certain item and use it on his adventure. However unlike Mario, Wisps are temporary. There is a total of 9 wisps available in Sonic Colors Ultimate. These Wisps Are:

Boost (White)
Most common one found, the white Wisps fill the Boost meter
Yellow Drill (Yellow)
Allows the player to drill underground. It also allows Sonic to manuver faster underwater.
Laser (Cyan)
Allows Sonic to move in lightning speed. They re able to bounce of walls and mirror crystals found in game.
Cube (Blue)
Transforms the blue rings into blocks and also blue blocks into coins. This way more paths become available for the hero.
Hover (Green)
Allows Sonic to fly in the air, Pressing dash in Ring line ups will allow Sonic to follow them.
Spikes (Pink)
Transforms Sonic into a pink Spikeball that allows him to roll up in the ceiling and other surfaces.
Rocket (Orange)
Blasts Sonic into the air in fast sooed and then allows him to free fall.
Frenzy (Purple)
Turns Sonic into a purple Shark and he is allowed to eat everything. The more he eats the taller he grows.
Ghost (dark green)
Was not included in the original (2010). It allows Sonic to go through walls given they can interact with anything on the other side.

Controls

Sonic Colors Ultimate Gameplay is very simple, as it sticks with it's basic formula that the series is known for. Sonic moves around with L3 alone the keypad does not support the gameplay. X is used for jumping. Similar to most games, the longer X is held down the higher the jump and the sooner the player releases x the shorter the jump. Double jump is available in colors ultimate by repressing X. X functions doesn't end here as it is also the main button for Homming Attacks. When Sonic approaches an enemy, a jumping pad or in general something interactable tapping X will allow Sonic to attack that area. The indication that Sonic can approach/attack that target is marked with a red circle on the given target. O is used for dash. The dash meter is placed on the bottom left corner and indicates the time Sonic can be dashing. Enemies hit while dash will be eliminated and near by rings will be magnetised to him. The boost meter fills by collecting white Wisps and by eliminating various enemies. Square is used to crouch and pass through squeezed areas. Jumping and pressing square will have the Hero stomping the ground breaking surfaces to visit lower areas and defeating enemies below. Last but not least R1 is the usage of the wisps. Once a player collects a certain colored Wisp, the boost meter will have the symbol of the certain wisp and once R1 is used that wisps will go away. Collecting a wisp while in possession of other will not stuck and instead will replace the old one with the newest one. All the wisps have abilities that can be triggered with either X or the dash button. When Sonic is on a rail, the player can jump and boost, however if the rail they re currently riding leads to a dead end , the player can change rail by tilting L3 left and right. Some levels, will request the player to constantly use L3 to swap paths left and right as ahead of them there will be nothing but cliffs and deaths.

Multiplayer

In game land the player can experience playing the game in local multiplayer. When selecting the world the first option given to the player is for local Single or multiplayer. In multiplayer, two friends race to reach the end whilst collecting coins. The players can hit each other by using the home attack while targeting the other player, this will cause the sonic bot that was hit to fall on the ground. The problem with the multiplayer mode though is that its pointless. The players do not compete as to who will get the most points and neither who reaches the finish line first. The game mode is NOT played in Split screen as both players share the same screen. In the case where player A or B speeds and leaves the other player behind, the game will freeze and the player left behind will be teleported to the location of the other player. The level design has nothing to do with the levels found in the main game as the maps are mainly made by colorful cubes without textures or enviromental pieces.

Collectables

The game has othree type of collectable and can be found in every level. The first type of collectables are the various cosmeticks the heroes get to unlocked. As mentioned above, one of the new features the remaster added was the cosmeticks. The player can visit the settings area where the store is placed. The players can purchase items such as

  1. Gloves: Various colored gloves
  2. Shoes: Various colored shoes
  3. Aura: An Aura that surrounds Sonic
  4. Speed Boost: The Color of the Aura when boosting
  5. Player icon: The icon representing the players image
In order to purchase these cosmeticks the players have to collect the coins that are placed within the levels. Coins are also earned by achieving a high rank at the end of the level(A & S). The second type of collectables are the famous red rings that are in every Sonic Game. As always there are five red rings seperated within a level and the more the players get the more extra levels they unlock in the arcade room. Last but not least, the chaor emeralds that unlocked Super Sonic.. When collecting all 180 red coins, the player can access all th e levels in the arcade land. Whilst playing the levels the players will eventually unlock the emeralds.

Music and Level

Sonic Tails
First things first the music of the game similar to every sonic game is really good. Since it's a remaster the game has all the tracks from the original 2010 title. Neverteless the developers went out of their way to add new songs that are remix of the original. The remix songs were meet with mix reviews as they ARE good, but something about the original songs is more unique. The level design is unique to the theme Park's attractions. For example, the second world is representing the sugar land. everything is made to represent a sweet. The loops are made of Donuts, the roads of biscuits with whipe cream and everything. Another world represents the trains and have sonic swapping inbetween them and so many more that make each attraction unique with it's own identity. Outside of the appreasance of each world the level designs are fan with plenty of roads to reach the finish line. Some may take the first approach of the game whilst others will use any of their 8 Wisps power to find an alternative path. Whether by launching themselves up or by drilling the ground. Some levels may end within minutes while others may take their time. Outside of the main levels, there's the multipleplayer levels, that unlike the prior ones, they re more linear and they re made with monochronic colored cubes.

Final Thoughts

Overall Sonic Colors Ultimate is avery good game and a faithfull remaster. The games first land can last up to four hours , however it is highly replayable as the more the player proceed with the story and the worlds they get to unlock more wisps powerups. Then when a player revisit certain levels they ll be able to unlock further routes. E.g The first ever level starts as a 3D level and eventually turns into 2D. The first 2D section of the first level, given it's the first run, it will have a yellow wisp filter locked ,indicating that the player cannot use that certain power up at the time beeing. if the players defeat a certain level in planet 2 and unlock the yellow wisps, upon replaying the first level the players will be able to receive the yellow power up that was previously locked and discover new sections and other paths. The more wisps the player get to play, the more the paths become available for the player The story mode is simple and enjoyable, delivering hilarious jokes and one liners here and there. The wisps as new abilities are unique and ever since their debut with colors, the Wisps remained standard with the franchise appearing in other entries such as Sonic Forces, Sonic racing, Sonic Generation and other titles. The addition of multiplayer may not be perfect but it's inclusion is well received. The only negative critisisms for the game is it's low quality cutscenes and ghost. Given that the developers improved the graphics whilst on gameplay, they did not change anything for the cutscenes. This lead to the ingame graphicks to resemble the ps3 to ps4 era while the cutscenes stuck back on the ps2 to the ps3/wii era with pixelised models in the distance. The ghost was the new Wisp ability added to colors Ultimate however, none of the levels take advantage of it. All the other wisps have levels and collectables placed for them but the ghost has none.
