The World of Spirit Of The North

Spirit of The North is combines art, legends and gameplay together in an interesting way. Similar to other indie titles such as Little Nightmares, he Journey and Abzu , the game uses
little to non dialogue in order to tell their story. In other words it's one of these Wordless Games. which rely heavily on their imagry to tell their tale. During the game, the player
get's to control of a lonely Fox,that wonders around in a snow storm all alone. The Players don't get to know what happened to it, but the game shows through its cutscene that the fox seems to following a
Red line in the sky. The gameplay begins, by allowing the player to walk around the snowy mountains freely. It has no limitation as to where the fox can go. There is no sign of life anywhere.
In fact in every map of the world, there no being been alive. Each location is unique. As mention the fox begins it's adventure on a snowy mountain. Leaving the mountains, the fox ventures around in
an environment filled with temples, ancient ruins letteres and rocky green areas. The fox also comes around an 'enemy' which is represented as red thorns and act as a virus that kills the environment.
In fact a chapter has the screen filled with red smoke as the fox goes deeper to the core of this infection. Once the fox escapes the dangerous area another green scenery awaits it, filled with abadoned
buildings that seemed to have collapsed after humanity assumingly left. It has a healthy flora and crystal clear waters. Unfortunately the further the fox proceeds in the area the red smoke reappears and
deep within the area there is a major problem with petrol. Petrol seems to be falling around the world, infecting the water and the green area. The fox is the only one who can stop it and save the area.
The final chapter takes place in a very unique area which will be better for the players to experience for themselves.

Like most of the games it's genre, there is always collectables to be found. In Spirit of the North there's three things that can be considered collectable:

  1. Shaman Staffs
  2. Carved Ancient Murals
  3. Spirit Shamans
In the game, the fox can come across a shaman's staff. The fox can pick the staff and then it should try to locate the Shaman's corpse. By returning the staff to it's owner, the spirit of the Shaman will
thank the Fox and then it will pass to the afterworld. There is a total of 28 Shamans, and the player gets a trophy for restoring 5, 12 and 28.
The second type of collectable is the Carvings of Ancient Murals. These carvings showcase events of what happened to this world. In order for the fox to collect the art, it has to pass the power of a Spirit Bloom
Spirit Blooms are cyan flowers that the fox can interact to gain their power. (More of them below) There is a total of 8 of them.
The last type of collectable are the Shaman Spirits. During the final chapter , the fox can venture around in the enormous sandbox that is the final chapter and greet every single one of the shamans.

Gameplay

The Gameplay of Spirit of the North is very simple, and it can be enjoyed by anyone, despite their gaming experience however,it is worth mentioning how the players should check for some buttons as the Game does not
give the player a straight forward tutorial. The fox manuvers around with L3. It jumps around with X and sprints while L1 is held down. The fox interact with items through circle, Whether is to pich up items or even
obtain powers through Spirit Bloom cyan flowers, that grant spiritual powers to the foz. An empowered fox is symbolized with cyan symbols. While empored the fow can use triangle to sent the spirit power to pillars
or walls in general to solve puzzles. Holding down circle, will cause a giant bark. This can be used to defeat certain virus or even break something that requires a full charge. R2 when filled with power allows the fox to
dash/blink foreward. Last but not least square can be used to swap in between the normal fox and a spiritual fox. A Spiritual Fox is a fox, that can stand on water, run faster and go through objects the normal fox cant.
The spiritual fox has a certain time limit before returning to the actual fox. The players need to keep swapping between these two froms in order to proceed in various areas.

Final thoughts

The player can spent as much time as they wish in order to discover the beutiful world developed by infuse sudio. The graphics as mention are really good, there are times where it looks unpolish but overall
feel good. There is a feeling of realism is around the world. Everything seems to be interacting in a natural way. The water in the lakes and ponds respond to the Fox's steps and the reflect the fox. During the snowy
parts of the game, the fox leaves a trail from where ever it was.
It does not suffer from frame rate issues, but it does contain slight bugs. For example, since the game does not have a staright forward path, the players
are free to explore their given area until they find their goal. From personal experience in more than one case, i was able to get myself out of the given sandbox and run endlessly in the world until i came across the invisible
walls however, in other parts of the game where there were various puzzles, i was capable of proceeding through parkouring , until i was met with a dead end, that required me to reset the game in order to spawn with a power up
that i was meant to have IF i did the puzzle. Another common critisism the game has, is the fact that the first 3 chapters and chapter 7 are vastly superior than chapters 4,5 and 6. In the first chapters the player
receive pieces of lore while still exploring the landscape and solving puzzles. In the later three the game somehow got lost, and instead of having things in a natural way, the puzzles were feeling forced and kind of random,
the elements of lore well hidden extremely well in chapters whose max are much bigger than the priors. In temrs of it's length the game has a decent sizet.Nevertheless, the pacing of each player differs, some might take their
time walking around in the landscapes while others may try to solve the game's puzzle as much as they can.
